Chemical Health and Safety

The Chemical Safety Program is designed to protect Mason employees and students from the dangers associated with managing chemicals during classes, research, and routine work procedures. Chemicals play an active role in our daily life and it is important that we understand how to use them safely. The Office of Laboratory Safety has developed a laboratory safety plan that reduces potential exposure to chemicals by means of administrative, engineering and safety controls. This program is designed specifically for Mason and the activities conducted within our classrooms, laboratories and maintenance operations. This plan and subsequent safety procedures are based on federal regulations and established safety strategies practiced throughout industry and academia.

This website provides information regarding Mason's chemical safety program. The following links will provide access to Mason's Laboratory Safety Manual, chemical safety forms and information that will help you manage your activities safely.

We encourage you to explore our chemical safety plan to learn how this program affects you and how it can improve the safety of your instructional or work environment. For questions or comments regarding the chemical safety program at Mason, please contact the Chemical Hygiene Officer, David Farris (dfarris@gmu.edu, 703-993-2507). In the event of a chemical emergency please contact the Chemical Hygiene Officer. If the Chemical Hygiene Officer is unavailable please contact the Mason police by dialing 911.
