Radiation Health and Safety

The Radiation Safety Program at George Mason University is designed to protect the Mason community and the public from unnecessary exposure to radiation, while permitting the use of radioactive materials, when necessary, in scientific research and instruction. Through the radiation safety program, Mason provides training in radiation safety, personal monitoring services, and procedures for maintaining exposure levels As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is responsible for reviewing all uses and users of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices at Mason and for evaluating the effectiveness of Mason's radiation safety program. The Radiation Safety Officer is responsible for implementation of the radiation safety program..

For questions or comments about the radiation safety program at Mason, please contact the Radiation Safety Officer, Diann Stedman (dstedman@gmu.edu, 703-993-4820). In the event of an emergency after hours or when the RSO is unavailable, please contact the university police by dialing 911 on any university telephone.
